Managing Urinary Incontinence in Men

Urinary incontinence affects millions of men for a variety of reasons. This condition occurs when the bladder’s sphincter muscle isn’t strong enough to hold back urine, and can happen when the sphincter is too week, bladder muscles contract too strongly or the bladder is too full.

Older men tend to have issues with urinary incontinence more often than young men, although it is not a normal sign of aging. Urinary incontinence might not have anything at all to do with age; it could be caused by urinary tract infections, complications from prostate cancer, neuromuscular disorders like MS or ALS, or spinal injuries.

There are several different types of urinary incontinence in men. For example, stress incontinence can occur when an activity as simple as coughing or laughing causes a small amount of urine to leak from the urethra. This is due to weakened pelvic muscles causing the bladder down into a position that doesn’t allow the urethra from closing completely. Overflow incontinence, on the other hand, is most common in males and is basically the inability to control urination because you are unable to completely empty your bladder. Urge incontinence is feeling the strong need to urinate even if the bladder only holds a small amount of urine. This can be caused by UTIs, kidney or bladder stones, or prostatitis.
