Adult Cloth Diapers vs. External Catheters

Managing Male Urinary Incontinence: Diapers or Pads

When it comes to managing male urinary incontinence, men are faced with a few different options. Two common choices are adult cloth diapers or male incontinence pads. These options come in two varieties: disposable and reusable. The disposable type can be more convenient, but are expensive and take up valuable space in our landfills. Reusable adult cloth diapers or pads, on the other hand, can be less of an expense overall as they are washed and used multiple times. Adult cloth diapers are generally preferred over disposable diapers, as they tend to be more effective at containing leaks.

The Disadvantages of Adult Cloth Diapers and Male Incontinence Pads

Although reusable diapers may be preferred over disposable diapers, there are still some reasons why using an external catheter may be a better alternative for male urinary incontinence. Some of the disadvantages of using adult cloth diapers and reusable male incontinence pads include:

  • They’re messy. Washing adult cloth diapers or pads is a messy job. Plus, over time they will continue to accumulate urine odor that cannot get washed away properly, and some heavier adult cloth diapers can take a long time to fully dry after washing.
  • They’re inconvenient. It can be very difficult to attempt to change a diaper yourself, especially in a public restroom or for those who have limited dexterity.
  • They can cause skin irritation. Because the wetness may not be completely pulled away from your skin, you could end up with skin irritation and rashes.
  • They aren’t discreet. When you have to wear a diaper out in public, you might be anxious that everyone can tell you’re wearing one. They can also be bulky, noisy and uncomfortable underneath your clothing.
